We are a multifaceted social enterprise offering nature based fun, and educational days to many different sectors with an emphasis on the wild!
Based in Sussex, particularly the Ashdown Forest Area, but able to travel for group bookings.
My name is Iona Fraser, and I started Ashdown Forage to share my own experiences of the positive impact that re-connecting with nature and our environment can have. I come from a very ‘foodie’ background, and have early memories of foraging with my parents for nettles and sloes, which I still find an infinitely beautiful and satisfying pastime. I pick, preserve, pickle and brew as much as I can at home, and am very pleased to be able to share this lifestyle with others, as I feel that there’s nothing healthier than interacting with our surroundings in this way…
I am also certain that beautiful, connective experiences with our countryside spaces breed respect in our practices as well as the desire to protect it. This passion for foraging led me into field mycology, which is the study of fungi, and I am happy to be able to offer more educational and ecological courses including basic microscopic identification techniques.
I am licensed by the Conservators of the Ashdown Forest to teach on the Ashdown Forest, a huge and diverse Site of Specific Scientific interest (SSSI), and I have won an UnLtd award to help me make this important experience and natural education available to as many people as possible, regardless of their ability to pay. I am fully insured, and have an enhanced CRB certificate.
Above all, I think there is nothing as fun as getting outdoors and getting your hands dirty, whether you are trying field butchery, making jam on a fire, or studying colourful and slimy fungi, you are guaranteed to come away knowing you have taken part in a life enhancing experience that will have changed the way that you relate to and interact with the world around you. But don’t take my word for it, book yourself a course and come find out!
